Handheld Units

The Cobra handheld radio has been manufactured in many different models over the years. Quantum advances in telecommunications and semiconductor technology have allowed many more features to be packed into much smaller units. The inside of the units today have more in common with small computers rather with the older CB radios.

There are 2 models currently in manufactured - the HH 38 WX ST and the HH Road Trip. The suffixes at the end of each model number means the same as for the mobiles. WX is for weather station capability, and ST is for SoundTracker technology.

A number of the previous models are still readily available on the market, where they continue to fetch good prices on sites like eBay.

The 75 WX ST CB radio is sometimes confused as a hand held because of its unusual shape. It is in fact a "remote mount" unit, and falls under the mobile category.

Your individual application will govern the type of rig that you need to buy. The benefits to using a hand held is portability. If you are on the move, and need something that is small and compact, then they are the ideal choice. However, if transmission range is something that you need, then they are probably not your best choice. The advertised range of most portables is about 4 miles. Depending on the terrain you may get less than that.

Always use the best antenna that you can. External magnetic mobile antennas are now supplied as standard with some handhelds.
